Branching Out
Currently in the UK tree thinnings have little economic value and are often sold as fire wood. Our challenge was to come up with a strategy for sustainable forest management and do good with the wood accumulated through this process.
Mushroom Research UK aims to cultivate mushrooms grown from locally sourced hardwood thinnings. The mushrooms and wood can then be used to create eco-friendly biodegradable packaging. Profits generated would go towards sustainable forest management and further research into the uses of mushrooms for example, antibiotics.
